Does one work better?
There is no good evidence that one brand works better than the other at the same strength. Both contain the same amount of the same ingredient. Some men report feeling a difference, which may come from timing, food, alcohol or simply expectation. If one brand suits you, there is no medical reason to switch, but switching between them at the same strength is not a change of medicine.
Choosing a strength
- 50 mg is the usual starting dose of sildenafil.
- 25 mg is often used for older men, men with liver or kidney problems, or men who get side effects.
- 100 mg is the maximum recommended dose, used when 50 mg is not enough.
- 120 to 200 mg are above the maximum dose approved for brand-name sildenafil. Use them only if a doctor has specifically prescribed them.
Safety
Common side effects include headache, flushing, indigestion, a stuffy nose and changes in colour vision. A heavy, fatty meal can delay the effect. Never take sildenafil with nitrates, “poppers” or riociguat. Seek urgent help for an erection lasting more than 4 hours or sudden vision or hearing loss.
